I have been a practicing physical therapist for 15 years and I worked in four different hospitals prior to my move to MGH. As a staff person when I came here, I was extremely impressed with the diversity of the years of experience amongst the inpatient and outpatient staff.

I love my patients and my work out in the community. This is what being a Physical Therapist at the MGH Chelsea HealthCare Center means to me.

I was studying for my Master’s degree in Physical Therapy at the MGH Institute of Health Professions when I started working with MGH’s PT group as part of a hip fracture study. I joined MGH Physical Therapy Services full-time after completing my Master’s and continued my career in community-based healthcare. Today, after twenty years with MGH, I have seen MGH’s freestanding, full-service community HealthCare Centers (HCCs) evolve and grow to serve the needs of their diverse communities.  I’ve worked at three centers—Charlestown, Chelsea and Revere—and I find my work as exciting and rewarding as ever.

One of my role models was Roger H. Sweet, MD, a long-time MGH Charlestown physician and former Medical Director for the MGH Health Centers. I was inspired by his passion for community service. The decision to have PT services come out to the communities was made by Dr. Sweet and Polly Cerasole, then PT Director of MGH Physical Therapy Services.

Community outreach is an important part of our mission at the HealthCare Centers. Physical therapy staff working within the hospital and the HCCs develop special programs to meet the educational needs of the communities we serve. Senior centers, for example, often invite us to present around the health and safety issues specific to their elderly clientele. The Chelsea HCC offers an annual “Safety in Summer” campaign for children. The focus is on ‘wheels’—scooter and bike safety. The Revere HCC offers a yearly road race and health fair. "Celebrating Women’s Health", organized by the MGH Community Health Associates, is offered each spring at one local HCC each year, rotating between Chelsea, Charlestown, Revere and the North End.

The “Healthy Heart” program at Charlestown HCC was the first MGH community outreach program in which I participated. It was run in conjunction with the Johnny’s supermarket chain and community organizations.  At the time the program was set up, Charlestown had one of the highest death rates from heart disease in the Boston area. Over the years its community’s demographics have changed, but the Charlestown HCC’s mission to bring the best in health care services to the people of Charlestown continues to evolve and grow.

Working in the community HealthCare Centers is always interesting. The diversity of the cultures we serve enriches our already rewarding work with patients who come to the centers for care. Each center provides interpreter services based on the needs of its community. Our commitment goes beyond literal translation of a patient’s symptoms and treatment programs. We are committed to understanding and integrating each patient’s cultural heritage with their health care needs.

What do I like best about my job? A community-based health care center serves patients and their families where they live. Caring for patients with a wide range of health care needs gives me the opportunity be utilize my generalist skills with patients of all ages and from many different cultures. Helping an elderly patient who has back pain to enjoy a fuller, more comfortable life is deeply satisfying.

Being part of MGH Physical Therapy Services at one of the HealthCare Centers  is the best of both worlds. We work in a small, close-knit medical environment with a definite sense of team spirit, yet we’re backed by all the advantages and resources of a major teaching hospital. Our ongoing support by MGH is very real. We participate in staff meetings, case studies, and educational in-services at the main hospital. Each local HCC offers the high quality of health care services one expects from MGH, within a patient-centered, family-oriented setting. We listen closely to our patients and make them active partners with us in delivering the best in personalized, patient-focused care in the heart of their own communities.

Ask me what first drew me to MGH and I’d say it was the hospital’s strong reputation for quality patient care and the in-depth knowledge of its medical team. MGH seemed like a good place to jumpstart my career.

Fresh out of school, my professional career began with the challenging and exciting task of finding a position as a physical therapist. Throughout the interview process and when first starting my new job, I was extremely apprehensive about not knowing everything. In the brief time that I have been at the Massachusetts General Hospital, I have come to learn that not having all of the answers is not such a "roadblock."
