Jackie Mulgrew, PT, CCS
Clinical Specialist, Inpatient Service

I have been a practicing physical therapist for 15 years and I worked in four different hospitals prior to my move to MGH. As a staff person when I came here, I was extremely impressed with the diversity of the years of experience amongst the inpatient and outpatient staff. Not surprisingly, the inpatient staff was generally a younger group, but there were several clinicians around the 5-10 year mark. This impressed me and indicated to me that there must be great things about MGH that invite staff to stay so long. I soon learned there are many reasons to stay.

There is a professional code of conduct at MGH, unlike any other that I have experienced. There is accountability for patients and accountability for career development. There is professional respect among peers, and even though not everyone comes here with all of these attributes, they soon learn to value and respect them. In return for the high level of professionalism, our management has respect for our personal needs as highlighted by such things as the great flexibility in work schedules and opportunities for part-time staff. Also I found amongst my colleagues an unlimited level of willingness to help one another in times of personal need.

When I first started practicing here as a Staff Therapist, I worked with a Clinical Specialist who possessed a wonderful foundation and knowledge in cardiovascular and pulmonary care and was a great teacher. I would look forward to his visits on the floor. I always had a question for him and he always challenged me to find my own answer. He would give me some leads and we had many wonderful discussions, disagreements and challenges for each other. He was a true mentor and brought out the best in me. Having a Clinical Specialist as my mentor and seeing this role first hand encouraged me to finally sit for my cardiovascular and pulmonary examination. I received nothing but support and encouragement to accomplish my board certification. With so many of us here, there is no better place to feel supported in reaching for this goal.  Along with my board certification came the promotion to Clinical Specialist. In my role as a Clinical Specialist, wonderful CS peers challenge my thinking and guide me when I am challenged with new problems. I don’t think there is a day that goes by that I don’t share a teaching moment with a Staff Therapist, many times in a reciprocal manner.

I must give credit to my previous experiences where much of my foundation had been laid, but at MGH, many opportunities opened up where I was able to demonstrate my skills as an effective communicator, someone who could influence practice and someone with the willpower to pursue the needs of others. I have been given and I have taken opportunities to work with other disciplines and I have represented the role of PT in many of these formats. I have also been active in clinical performance management groups.

And of course, the one thing that continues to be my passion is when I am in a room with a patient and I am making a difference in their life. I think that is what drives most of us. I drove my own practice to this point because I wanted to give the best care to my patients. Do I know it all? No. Not knowing is what gets me up in the morning to come back in here to explore and figure it all out. Do I do this alone? No! I come back again and I consult with my Clinical Specialist peers, my staff and other disciplines. I am proud and grateful to work at this unique place with a truly remarkable group of individuals.

I love my patients and my work out in the community. This is what being a Physical Therapist at the MGH Chelsea HealthCare Center means to me. I was studying for my Master’s degree in Physical Therapy at the MGH Institute of Health Professions when I started working with MGH’s PT group as part of a hip fracture study.

Fresh out of school, my professional career began with the challenging and exciting task of finding a position as a physical therapist. Throughout the interview process and when first starting my new job, I was extremely apprehensive about not knowing everything. In the brief time that I have been at the Massachusetts General Hospital, I have come to learn that not having all of the answers is not such a "roadblock."
